Tikkun
Olam
The Hebrew expression Tikkun Olam refers to
helping to repair and better the world. The mission of the Tikkun Olam
Committee is to provide TBS members with ongoing information and volunteer
opportunities to help this important and central tenet of Judaism. The Tikkun
Olum steering committee develops and facilitates projects and educational
events such as collection of food for the
Polk-Marion Food Share, clothes for local women's shelters, school supplies for
local foster children, and
more.
The steering committee also organizes educational
workshops and training topics that vary according to community interest. These
may include home ecology, volunteer education, working with special needs,
social action, and a Tikkun Olam youth seminar.
We welcome you to share your values, talent and
enthusiasm through the Tikkun Olam projects. Even if you only
have an hour a month to spare, we can help provide you with a meaningful way to
help repair the world.
Recycling
We are committed to
doing our part as a community to participate in recycling whenever and wherever
possible. We have clearly marked recycling bins placed all around the synagogue
for the convenience of our members and guests. We also participate in regular
Styrofoam collection drives and are continuously taking measures to make sure
that the operations of our facility are maintained with eco-friendly materials
whenever possible.
Marion/Polk Food Share
At TBS we have ongoing
collections at the synagogue for food items that are donated to the Marion/Polk
County Food Share on a regular basis. We encourage everyone to bring canned or
dry food with them each time they visit the synagogue.
Mitzvah Projects
All of our b'nai
Mitzvah candidates develop their own "mitzvah project" as part of their
study and preparation to become an adult in the Jewish community. These
projects range from raising money for the kids' favorite causes to
actually doing volunteer work in the community. As a congregation, we
all support the students as they go through this process of learning
about caring for the world around them.
Operation
Love Boxes
by Amber Titus, Office Manager
“They
keep serving, we’ll keep sending” This is the motto of a cause that is
obviously close to my heart, as my husband, Sean, is currently serving a
13 month tour in Iraq. Over 3000 Oregon National Guard troops have
already deployed or will deploy this year. They are in a place where
comforts of home are not often easily accessible. Through love boxes
some of the smaller comforts of home can be sent to our soldiers, and
help them to feel supported and cared for.
You can include in your packages encouraging notes, your
e-mail address, music CD’s, books on CD, hand held games, cookies, jam,
granola, energy bars, skittles (they don’t melt), magazines, etc. Hard
candy and school supplies will get distributed to the local children.
Let your imagination be your guide! Nothing is insignificant, they use
it all! Do not send items that will melt, leak or spoil in the 7-10 days
it takes to get to the soldier. Sean tells me some popular items are
beef jerky, gum, hygiene products, and super soakers!
