Mussar Study

NOTE time change!  Sunday, April 21st will be In Person ONLY at 5pm

The study of mussar can be engaged by anyone, including non-religious Jews, because it focuses on personal ethical conduct, while being rooted in the Jewish textual tradition and contemporary science. We will be engaging the best-selling book Everyday Holiness by Alan Moranis in which, chapter by chapter, he presents Jewish thoughts on particular middot (patience, love, kindness, etc.).

There will be time for one-one and small group learning as well as with the whole group. Clifford Hartman, a retired psychologist with a deep, secular spiritual practice rooted in meditation, will be facilitating the group with support from Rabbi Eli.

See Rabbi Eli’s article in January Sholom Salem newsletter for more information.

ShabbaTones this Friday, March 29!

ShabbaTones services will be on the 5th Friday  (when there are 5 Fridays in a month) unless it conflicts with a holiday.

Services begin at 7:30 pm

JCEC: Christian Nationalism: Is it a Threat to American Jews?

Seth CotlarApril 7 at 1pm
In person ONLY

This presentation will summarize the scholarly literature on “Christian Nationalism” and assess the usefulness and limitations of that term for understanding the intersection of religion and politics on the contemporary American right. Professor Cotlar will also draw on his research into the history of the far right in post-WWII Oregon to talk about the specific ways in which Christian Nationalism has manifested inside the Oregon Republican Party and in Oregon society more broadly. While many people (rightly) associate late 20th century Oregon Republicanism with moderates like Mark Hatfield or Tom McCall, there was also an increasingly strong contingent within the Oregon GOP as early as 1960 that could be classified as “Christian Nationalist.” It is that far right contingent that contributed to the gradual transformation of the Oregon Republican Party away from the moderation of figures like Senator Hatfield, and toward the far right politics of the OR GOP’s 2020 and 2022 US Senate candidate, Jo Rae Perkins.

Seth Cotlar is a Professor of History at Willamette University. His current research project is entitled “Rightlandia: Walter Huss and the Long History of the Far Right in Oregon, 1955-2005.” Huss was an anti-communist crusader with ties to white nationalists, Christian supremacists, and neo-Nazis who, in 1978, was elected chair of the Oregon Republican Party. Cotlar teaches courses on the history of the far right and the history of American Conservatism.

Oregon Climate Presentation and Vigil

Amending the Oregon Constitution Regarding the Environment

PRESENTATION Sunday, April 14, 1 pm via Zoom

CLIMATE VIGIL Saturday, May 4, 8 pm at the Capitol

Candle with lines in arc above it to show the candlelight shining

Ask yourself: When I throw it away, where does it go and is that important? When I recycle incorrectly, why does it cost thousands of dollars? How can organic waste damage the environment if it is organic? Taking care of our state and our home has become of paramount importance as we watch the oceans warm, microplastics appear in our bloodstream, and our weather dramatically change. This class is just a tiny step to help us live in harmony with our home planet. Bring questions, bring best practices, and prepare to make a green change. A HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT FOR ALL Oregonians of faith and goodwill are building a coalition to advance the right to a safe & healthy environment for all people, including children and future generations. A growing coalition is working to amend the Oregon Constitution to protect everyone’s right to a healthy environment and a stable climate. On Saturday, May 4 in Salem, we are planning a Statewide Organizing Meeting (2:30-7:30pm) and Community Vigil (8-9pm).

In partnership, Pattie Sloan On behalf of Climate Vigil, bringing together people of faith and goodwill to take climate action, and Oregon Citizens for an Environmental Rights Amendment (OCERA), our nonpartisan coalition to protect everyone’s right to a healthy environment.

The Last Laugh

Sunday, April 28 at 1 pm

In Person ONLY

The Last Laugh is a feature documentary which asks the question whether it is ever acceptable to use humor about major tragedies. Are any topics off limit or are such jokes acceptable expressions of free speech? Mel Brooks, Carl and Rob Reiner, Sarah Silverman, Gilbert Gottfried, David Steinberg, and others give their views and tell their jokes. The movie also features a Holocaust survivor. Find out how she gets “the last laugh.”
